Material Aid.
The Kansas Aid Committee in the city of
Detroit have received the following letter
from an eminent and distinguished member
of the Bar of this State, formerly a resident
of Albany:-
New York, Feb. 21, 1856.
Mr. C. P. WILLIAMS:
Dear Sir—I perceive by the New York
papers of morning that you have been appointed chairman of a committee for the Free
State inhabitants of Kansas. Until yesterday I had supposed that matters had taken
such a turn of late as to secure them, at least
for the present, from any other outrages.—
But the instructions of the Secretary of War,
to Col. Sumner, to employ the United States
troops to put down forcibly any resistance to
the laws enacted by the agents of their Missouri invaders, and the prohibition in substance and effect, against employing those
troops to repel invasions from Missouri without further instructions from Washington,
(which must of course come too late,) together
with the unworthy equivocation, to use no
stronger terms, of the President's message to
the Senate communicating these instructions,
have convinced me that the Kansas settlers
have still much to suffer from administrative
fraud, if not from actual violence. In the
meantime they need aid and support. Please,
therefore, to place the amount of the enclosed
check on your list as my subscription. I shall
be willing to repeat from time to time while
this state of things continues.
