FEDERALISM

The good people of these United States are at length roused. They are awake from a long night of delusion—convinced of their error, they determine to go forth in their strength, and with rapid strides to trace back the onward steps they had taken to the inevitable destruction of their liberties. Federalists—Friends to their country—the disciples of the Washington school will rejoice at the triumphant prospect growing out of the result: of the late elections in various parts of our country ; —this organ of the publick will, deliberately expressed by the suffrages of freemen, already sounds the knell to the theuretick and visionary schemes of a democratick faction—and proclaims the resurrection of Federalism, the return of an abused people to the good old paths laid out and trodden by the patriotick founders of our liberties.

“ The sun of federalism” long obscured by the clouds and mists of a kind of political fanaticism, has again dawned on our almost devoted country ; but a little while ago a star of promise, the harbinger of this long looked-for day of political reformation, appeared almost in the extremest east. The wise men of the East hailed it as an omen of expected good to their country. A spirit of inquiry was excited. The people soon became convinced that the system pursued by their rulers was destructive to their best interest, they determined to change their rulers, confident that a change of measures was absolutely essential to the prosperity of their country. New-Hampshire placed her seal to this determination, by electing a federal governor and Legislature ;the good work of reformation begun at this extreme point of the Union, has proceeded with a firm and steady pace. Rhode-Island, Massachusetts and Vermont follow close in the van.— Connecticut, a strong tower against which the shaft of faction ha ever been blunted, increases its federal majorities
The returns received from different districts of the State of New-York, warrant the most sanguine expectation of a glorious result. New-Jersey is already hailed a legitimate sister of the Eastern family; her next election will prove that her eastern friends have not called her by a wrong name.

Nor is it the East and North of the United States that feel alone the genial effects of the new-risen sun of Federalism—the South and West too begin to give testimony to its benign and salutary influence. Maryland, one of the Carolinas, and Ohio, give substantial proofs by their late elections, that they prefer returning to fixed systems, rather than hazard their interests longer on uncertain philosophick experiments.

And Virginia—yes—Virginia, too, [Mr. Jefferson's own state] has, in her recent election for Congressmen, by returning five more Federalists than formerly, added another testimony to the fact, that a change of men is absolutely necessary to insure a change of measures, so indispensably necessary to the welfare of this great and growing Republick.
