GREAT DISASTERS IN AMERICAN HISTORY
The Great Drought of 1930-31
Great cracks appeared in the dry earth in 1930, when drought made its slow but blighting advance. Fall and winter passed, still no rain! Winter wheat and spring crops withered and died. Farmers sold their live stock for lack of feed.
When the Red Cross took charge of relief early in 1931, seed was the first help given to farmers on 1057 counties in 23 states.
Then the Red Cross brought food, clothing and medical assistance to 2,765,000 persons in the drought area.
When rains revived the parched earth later in 1931, Red Cross seeds sprouted and flourished, producing crops estimated at $20,000,000.
