The refusal of the Board of Directors to charter the Great Eastern to Mr. Lever for a trip to America at £20,000, shows the confidence felt in the success of the experiment. The London News states that there is a rush of applications for passage, and that the monster ship is so densely crowded with visitors from day to day that the price of admission had been raised to 5s. Her trial trip to Cherbourg was to take place on the 8th for which an immense number of tickets had been sold. If that proves successful as anticipated, a crowd will take passage on her for Portland. Mr Russell, the builder, is to come out on the first trip of the Great Eastern. She would sail from Holyhead on the 15th of September, and the New Yorkers still expect that the Eastern will come round from Portland to Port Morris, near the Harlem Bridge, for the purpose of enabling New Yorkers to pay her a visit.
