Seeding Of Wheat For Cover Crop In State Not Allowed

The wheat acreage allotment program in Montana will not be modified to permit the seeding of winter wheat as a protection against wind erosion of summer fallowed land, Howard J. Doggett, chairman of the Production Marketing Administration committee, warned wheatmen.

The committee pointed out that wheat is not generally utilized as winter cover crop in Montana and that in many areas winter rye will serve a similar purpose and can later be harvested as hay or grain, or pastured off, whichever may be desirable. Rye does not count against farm wheat acreage allotment.
