Full Text
The Baltimore American of Friday afternoon, says the meeting was held in Temperance Hall, and was attended by "a number" of the friends of Fremont.
A number of persons opposed to the party were in the Hall, and before the organization was completed some one proposed three cheers for Fremont, which was followed by three groans, and three cheers were given for Fillmore, and three groans for Buchanan. A general melee then began, and the Hall was cleared in a few minutes, some of the party escaping out of the windows. One of the members of the meeting succeeded in getting out of the crowd with the loss of his coat, and was followed by the crowd up to Baltimore street, where he took refuge in a store and left by the rear door. But few persons were struck, the object being apparently to break up the meeting without using serious personal violence. Though our citizens are universally opposed to the principles which the meeting advocated, the course pursued was disreputable, and can only help the cause it was intended to crush.
