In America men live and die free and independent, for nothing obliges them to throw off that liberty which is the most lovely ornament and most valuable prerogative of human nature—the country abounds with all the necessaries of life and the inhabitants are both numerous and rich—valiant and industrious—the establishment of arts, trades, and manufactures, has made them entirely independent of other countries for any of the necessaries or even the luxuries of life. and every citizen is his own politician and eligible to any public office, whatever may be his religion.
