Melancholy Accident.
It becomes our painful duty to chronicle one of those accidents that chill the nerves and make the blood curdle coldly about the heart. Near dark last night, little Mollie Forrest Haslam, a daughter of John and Martha Haslam, aged three years and six months, was burned to death in a most shocking manner. Her parents live on McLemore street, between Gay and Cedar. They reside in a two-story house and occupy one of the upper rooms as a family room.
The child was a fine, sprightly little girl and somewhat of a pet of the neighborhood. The mother went down stairs on some domestic duty leaving the little girl alone. There was some fire in the grate at the time, though not much, and a candle near by. During the absence of Mrs. Haslam, the child, as is supposed, endeavored to light the candle and set her clothes on fire. On the return of the mother, a little fire was discovered on the hearth, and the unfortunate child was found under the sewing machine. All her clothes were burned off, and she herself was burned almost to a crisp, the skin and flesh sloughing off her limbs and body. Her finger nails were burned off. Death put an end to her tortures speedily, as she died in a few moments after being discovered. The father and mother are overwhelmed at the catastrophe. They have many friends here and also in the city of Louisville. We deeply sympathise with them in their terrible calamity.
