This day, his Excellency the Governor passed through this town on his return from Kennebec to Boston. About thirty of the most respectable citizens from this, and the town of Lisbon, zealous to manifest their high esteem for so worthy and illustrious a character, met him on horse-back as he entered the town, and escorted him to Read's Ferry. It was much regretted that his Excellency could not make it convenient to dine in town. All were much gratified with his modest and affable, tho' highly dignified deportment. The democrats were respectfully invited to join in this expression of respect for the Chief Magistrate, but they angrily refused. After parting with his Excellency, the company repaired to Mr. R. D. Harris's, and after enjoying the feast of reason and the flow of soul, parted at an early hour, much elated with the occurrences of the day.
