House Votes Sales Tax On Candy, Movie Tickets

A sales tax revision which will put a two-cent tax on most adult movie tickets which are now tax exempt. An amusement tax will be placed on 40-cent admission tickets instead of starting with the 1st cent. Candy, which is now free of tax, will be tapped on purchases, which come in packages, that sell for 5 cents or more.

Items which bore a one cent levy will now bring in two cents on the 3rd cent purchase instead of the 1st. A three cent tax will be levied on the 6th cent instead of the 7th.

Ten cent items and combination purchases such as two nickel soft drinks will no longer be taxed but the purchase price of items over ten cents will be taxed on the 11th cent instead of the ninth. This will eliminate the tax, for example, of a second cup of coffee.

Refunds on hotel and apartment lodgings for the first six months' rent have been killed and a 3 per cent tax imposed.

The $274,056,984 general appropriations act that was drafted by a joint senate house compromise committee was passed by the House 63 to 13 with no debate. It previously had been approved 32-2 by the Senate.

The bill provides $17,000,000 more for schools; more for higher education and state mental and custodial institutions, but less for old age assistance and aid to dependent children than the 1951 appropriations.

The measure now goes to the Senate.
