A new $35,000 theater for colored people will be erected in North Memphis, this summer, and be ready for operation by the first week in next October, according to information given out this week by Chalmers Cullins and Nate Evans, well-known executives of Main Street's most popular theatre with colored patrons, the Orpheum.
Messrs. Cullins and Evans disclosed that the new theater will be located on Thomas street, just North of Firestone Boulevard, in the heart of the thickly settled area bordered by the Klondike, New Chicago, and equally well-known colored communities.
The building will be entirely new, constructed by the Thomas and Belz Construction Company. It will have a seating capacity of approximately 700. Construction plans call for the latest and most up-to-date features of theater construction—with air-conditioning, modern heating and lighting arrangements, the best picture and sound equipment, as well as modern and comfortable seats and rest room equipment. An ample stage will be included to provide for regular vaudeville and other flesh shows.
In discussing operation plans for the new theater, Messrs. Cullins and Evans stated that they intend to continue the same policy for its operation that they have gained a reputation for at the Orpheum—that is bringing the best pictures and most outstanding attractions for the stage possible to obtain. They have considered at length the picture tastes of colored Memphians, and plan to offer attractions which will satisfy the entertainment desires of all classes of patrons.
Other attractions features of the new theater will be an "Amateur Night," "Bank Night," "Hot Seat Night," whereby patrons will be accorded an opportunity to obtain cash prizes and other awards, and regular vaudeville, featuring local talent and road shows.
Plans are being discussed for sponsoring a "guessing" contest among the people of the city for the naming of the new theater. The Memphis WORLD newspaper will carry further details of this contest in later issues. Citizens in all sections of the city will be eligible to take part. A special award will be given to the person submitting the winning name.
A special ceremony is planned for the opening day early in October.
