Edward A. Jewett Heard From

A letter from Mr. Edward A. Jewett, dated at Chicago, Dec. 1st, was received by a friend of his in Burlington, Thursday evening, and has been shown to us, says the Free Press, in which Mr. Jewett says that he had been thunderstruck on finding in a Chicago morning paper a dispatch stating that Collector Crane had been declared a defaulter to the amount of $17,000; and that he, Jewett, was charged with having embezzled the money. He goes on to say that God knows he never took a dollar of the government's money; that the charge against him is beyond his comprehension; that his accounts were "perfectly straight" when he left Mr. Crane, nearly two years and a half ago; that he denies the charge in toto, and that he desires an investigation, which will show whether he is guilty or not. The Free Press further says, we give Mr. Jewett, as promptly as possible, the benefit of this denial. We take it that a full investigation of this matter cannot be long delayed, which we await with the simple desire that truth and right may prevail.
