THE LAST CHANCE.

The only hope of the Union is through the prowess of the Democratic party. Turn the question as you may you cannot change the result. The first step to be achieved by that party is a thorough organization. That must be done everywhere and on the grandest scale. It must be done by States, by districts, by counties, by towns, by wards and by neighborhoods. The entire force must be mustered. Desertion from the enemy must be encouraged. It is going on rapidly. Let the deserters be kindly received that our forces may be augmented and that victory may be more complete. The party knows not its immense power, and never will until the organization is as far perfected as human energy, perseverance and determination can make it.

The second step in the programme is to carry the elections. Perfection in the first instance will secure this result. There is cheering news in all the late Spring elections. The Democratic strength is being handsomely increased. Every vote taken so far goes to prove it. Victory may not be counted upon in every instance, but heavy gains will cheer the hearts of the Democratic army which is now entrenched before the abolition strongholds, and is bent upon its ultimate demolition. Carry the State elections—send Democrats and conservative men to Congress—purge the Augean stables of black republicanism and once more infuse life, health, honesty and political vigor into the councils of the nation; pave the way firmly and surely for the election of a Democratic President—oust the corruptionists from office and give the people rest from the fear of being skinned alive to pay the debts accumulating from the course of systematic thieving and plundering that is now going on.

This accomplished and there is almost a certainty of the restoration. The people are coming to see it. Republicans are giving way to the fair prospect and are deserting their party, which stands great alone in baseness and corruption. They can see no hope in the cause of their present leaders and they are bound to have something better. The strength once in the hands of the Democracy, the Union is whole again—peaceably and with liberal concessions if may be forcibly if it must. There is no middle ground—no halting this side of a complete and thorough restoration.

Every Democrat must see that a great responsibility rests with him. Let him labor accordingly.
