Yesterday Capt. Thompson came to town from Charlestown, South-Carolina, which he left on the 16th ult. He was taken, on the 26th of February last, in the privateer brig Chase, of this place, and carried into that port, by the British Ship Duke de Chartres, of 20 guns. He informs, that tho American prisoners in Charlestown are treated with humanity, have good provisions, though too scanty in allowance: That he was allowed free liberty, by his parole, to travel where he pleased within the lines: That the fresh provisions in the town are extremely poor, and very scarce; beef was sold at two shillings sterling a pound. He saw a turkey sold for six dollars: but was told that the price was sometimes more than double that sum.
Capt. Thompson further informs, that while he was in Charlestown, one of General Greene's servants came into the town with the General's horse, which he had stolen, together with the pistols, holsters, saddle, &c. That, about the same time, an officer of the British guards, with 18 men, deserted in a body to Our army: That those inhabitants who are disaffected to the British government, are allowed to retire into the country when they please: And that desertions from both armies are very frequent.
Capt. Thompson observed no appearance of an intended evacuation of Charlestown.
