By an extra from the New York Herald, we have intelligence of a calamitous fire, which has laid in ruins the town of Nantucket, Mass. A slip from the Warder office, dated Tuesday morning, furnishes the following particulars:
It becomes our melancholy duty to record one of the most calamitous fires that ever happened in this place. We have had an awful night. The fire is still raging. At 11 o'clock last evening, our inhabitants were aroused with the appalling cry of fire, and it was soon discovered in the store occupied by E. G. Kelley. The flames spread with such rapidity as to baffle every exertion to repress them—expedients of blowing up houses was resorted to as the only means to arrest the conflagration—but it would seem with little success. More than twenty buildings are thus destroyed, and indeed many more would have been.
The town presents a scene of devastation that language cannot describe. The whole square of buildings bounded by Main, Centre, Broad and Federal streets is in ruins, and nearly all the buildings opposite those which formed the square. Trinity Church is now in flames. All the buildings on North Water street as far as Aaron Mitchell's. (inclusive) all the buildings on Main street from G. H. Riddell's to Straight Wharf. On Union street as far as the building occupied by the town officers (inclusive.) Washington st. as far as Capt. L. H. Pease's (inclusive.) Dr. Ruggles' house Orange street was blown up; which arrested the flames at that point.
The aggregate loss is at present incalculable. Many rumors are afloat of injury received by individuals, but they are so vague, and the whole town is in such confusion, that it is utterly impossible to arrive at the truth. We are at this moment told that no one has been seriously hurt. The Inquirer and Mirror printing offices are both destroyed. We can give but a hasty account of this dreadful calamity.
Among the sufferers are E. & J. Kelley, W. H. Geary, G. W. Macy, T. W. Calder, J. B. Swain's Agency Insurance Office, G. R. Pierce & Co., Citizen's Bank, Exchange Reading Room, Henry Goodrich, Henry A. Kelley, Mitchell & Whitney, S & F. Colburn, Gorham Macy, D. C. Swain, A. W. Stebbins, D. Wood, G. Macy, J. Brock, Samuel Swain, Harvey Crocker, Commercial Insurance Office, Ray & Barrett, Gardner & Macy, C. B. Swain, J. C. Swain, J. Cook, Jr. & Co., J. Easton 2d. W. C. Swain, M. & M. Bank, Worth & Crocker. Fred. W. Gardner. A. M. Nahar. F. W. Cobb, John Morissey, Washington Hall, Whig Reading Room, and E. W. Allen's, J. C. Congdon, W. Harris, Post Office, Gosnold House, A. Howard, E. W. Cobb, A. M. Macy, G. H. Riddell, Nickerson & Waitt. Orange st.—Dr. Ruggles and P. H. Folger's badly injured. Centre st.—Dr. Fearing, Richard Mitchell, Thaddeus Coffin, P. F. Ewer.
In short, we cannot begin to count the names—we have not mentioned half.
