Why the Conventions Went

Mr. Samuel Mercer is still insisting with all seriousness that the democratic conventions were taken from Des Moines because the newspapers here could not be relied on to report the proceedings fairly.

Mr. Mercer will deceive nobody. The conventions were taken away from Des Moines because a majority of the members of the state committee are conservatives, and because Des Moines is the head center of Bryan influence in the state. A Bryan resolution was adopted by the committee to sugar coat the pill, but the pill contained some bitter tasting drugs just the same, for the Bryan men to swallow.

State Chairman Miller may be ousted from the management of the campaign. But it will not be for lack of foresight on his part. He is not planning to submit the matter to a vote in the headquarters of his enemies. The Des Moines Bryan men will have just as far to travel to reach Mr. Miller as Mr. Miller can well arrange.

That is why the state conventions will be held at Sioux City and at Cedar Rapids.-Register and Leader.
