The Tiffin Tribune says, We have been placed in possession of the facts in a case of elopement, upon the part of a young Miss of Huron county, with a married man, which are but a repetition of the usual circumstances in such frequently occurring events. On last Wednesday a well dressed and outwardly appearing gentleman by the name of John S. Scoville, in company with a lady arrived at the Davis House, and registered himself as "John S. Scoville and Lady, Huron County, Ohio."
The girl passed as his wife, and they rode out in a fine buggy behind a pair of fine horses, and enjoyed themselves in the manner that the recently married generally do. The gentleman had business in Attica and went to the town saying that he would call for his lady on his way back, which he did and remained at the Davis House until Monday evening. In the evening they repaired to the Theater. In the mean time the father of the young lady, whose name is Bissell, becoming uneasy at the long absence of his petted and only child secretly dispatched a man to this place to look after them. He found them here, and learned that they were passing themselves off as man and wife.
He at once telegraphed to the girl's father who procured a warrant for the seducer's arrest, and in company with the sheriff of Huron County started for Tiffin, and arrived on Monday evening. The pair were still at the Theater when he arrived. The arresting party quietly waited for their appearance, as they were still in blissful ignorance of the developments awaiting them.
Upon entering the sitting room of the Hotel the Sheriff stepped in and presenting his bracelets to the gentleman fitted them to his wrists. The young lady at the appearance of her father, conscience stricken and ashamed, as she well might be, sank despairingly into a corner of the room and hid her face in her hands. The facts of Scoville's villainous proceedings now came out. It seems that he has a wife and two children living in New York State. He has been boarding at Mr. Bissell's house in New London, Huron County, and engaged in the "Patent Right Business" of course. He had played the "nice young man" the evidence of which was his innocent manners and good clothes. After forging the man's name and obtaining a supply of money, he borrowed his horses and buggy and a set of single harness which he left in Centerville, and upon the pretence of visiting friends left with the girl on Monday, two weeks ago. He managed to swindle the old man out of about $100. He acknowledged that he was a married man after arrest. He was taken to jail on Monday night upon the warrant, and was conveyed to Huron county, for trial on Tuesday. The father took his daughter home. The young lady is said to be highly educated and beautiful. Her parents grief was great, and only the presence of the Sheriff prevented his killing the scoundrel upon the spot. He is in good circumstances, and his child was well cared for.
There is a moral that is plain in this too common event. There are young ladies in this, and every other community, who may learn a lesson from this girl's experience. The disposition to take up with adventurers is not uncommon. Let him but dress well, have good address, and hint at his resources and the honest young men of the neighborhood are discarded for the recently dawned ne plus ultra.
The young lady who permits the familiar approaches of a stranger, no matter what his apparent references are, forgets that "the world is full of rogues." And the man who demands more than polite courtesy in such cases, is "prima facia" a scoundrel and should be avoided.
