A Disappointing Platform.
The Baltimore Sun in a recent editorial says: Our Republican contemporaries are greatly displeased with the platform of the Maryland Democrats because it does not advocate free coinage of silver at 16 to 1. "Not a word," the New York Sun complains, "about the principal issue which the Democracy has in keeping." Indeed, the Republicans everywhere cannot conceal their anxiety for the Democrats to make the race in 1900 on the platform of 1896. They feel that with free silver well to the front Alger, Eagan, embalmed beef, imperialism and general mismanagement will all be forgotten and the Republican ticket will again go through with a whoop. The failure to adopt their program would be a grievous disappointment. In politics as in war when a skillful general finds that his enemy wishes him to do a certain thing he forthwith does something else.
Now let everyone interested in the welfare of the Democratic party in the State of Maryland resolve to do all in their power for the success of the ticket this fall. Let's have done with petty factional strife and bickering and get together on this most favorable occasion. Victory will be ours if all unite and stand firm in the ranks.
