Syracuse, N. Y., has just been enjoying the fruits of the indiscriminate mingling of the sexes and of all classes of society last Winter. A handsome and graceful young man named Gilbert came to the city last Fall. It was given out that his parents had an abundance of wealth, but being an expert skater and enjoying the sport he consented to become an instructor at a rink. All Winter he reveled in the admiration and adoration of the ladies. So happy was he that he lingered in the city of salt until the other day a sheriff came from Pennsylvania and took him away to Easton where his name was Conley and where he used to work at his trade as a cigar-maker, to answer a charge of having trifled there with a young lady's love. When he was arrested his "grip-sack" was found to contain a large collection of letters and photographs from numerous well-known society ladies, married and single. Some of the letters were published and a social earthquake shook the city. Young ladies prepared to leave town, well-known men called at police headquarters to learn whether their wives or daughters had been entrapped, the rinks were roundly condemned and Conley threatened to sue the newspapers.
