PORTAGE COUNTY
Agricultural Fair & Cattle Show

The Annual Meeting, Cattle Show and Fair of the Portage County Agricultural Society was held at Ravenna on the 26th and 27th days of September, A. D. 1849, pursuant to the provisions of the Constitution of the Society.

The weather was fine and the number of persons in attendance very large. The number and quality of the articles exhibited leave no doubt of the steady increase of interest in the several departments of the Society.

It is to be regretted that the Board of Government, notwithstanding their exertions, failed in making such arrangements for the Fair as was desirable, and consequently the awarding committees were unable to discharge their duties as satisfactorily as they otherwise might have done: it is believed, however, that similar difficulties will in future be avoided, as the Board are employing efficient means to provide a suitable place for holding the Fair hereafter.

The several Committees on animals made their reports awarding premiums as follows:

THE COMMITTEE ON HORSES

Reported, that it was in many instances exceedingly difficult to determine which was most meritorious of several very fine horses, of various kinds, but on full consideration awarded

[There being no competition on teams, the Committee did not award premiums. The Board of Government however awarded to the township of Charlestown for a highly meritorious team, consisting of twelve yoke of working oxen, a premium of $10.00.]

On the second day the exhibition of manufactured articles, together with the products of the Dairy, Orchard, Garden, &c., took place in the Court House yard. The yard was densely crowded and hundreds were unable to enter at all. The several committees spoke highly of the articles which came to their notice, and it is believed that for variety, taste and skill, this exhibition will compare favorably with that of any previous year.

A mammoth Cheese weighing 400 lbs manufactured by Mr. Lewis S. Pope, of Troy, Geauga Co., attracted much attention, and had Mr. Pope been a member of the Society the committee would gladly have awarded him a premium; but as he is not, they award him a diploma.

THE COMMITTEE ON GARDENS

Reported, that the Gardens which they had been called on to inspect were worthy of much consideration; and in variety and quality of productions are rarely equaled. They recommended premiums, as follows:
