BOSTON, September 22.

On the DEATH of Judge SEWALL.

WHEN martial Heroes greatly buy Applause,
And bravely perish in their Country's Cause:
What Heart but melts? What Pen but strives t'express
Grateful his Actions, and our deep Distress?
What then forbids? Nay, does not Justice call
To mourn the Statesman's, as the Hero's Fall?
Shall youthful Scipio justly force a Tear,
And cold Neglect attend a Cato's Bier?
No..... Virtue till the Muses patronize,
Both when the Statesman and the Hero dies:
And he, that props the State, as well deserves
Our Thanks as he, who in the Army serves.
What means the pensive Look?..... the heaving Sigh?
The fallen Visage? and the watry Eye?
Why Broods sad melancholy on each Face?
And, like Contagion, blackens ev'ry Grace?.....
Sewall the just, the generous, and the wise,
Sewall has left us, and ascends the Skies. *
Clement in Justice, and unbrib'd his Hand;
Patient to hear, and quick to understand.
With Wisdom join'd, Justice maintain'd her Ground;
By Wisdom guided, Clemency was found.
While Christian Fervour in each Action glow'd,
And patriot Zeal in Silver Currents flow'd.
Not like the Miser, who adores his Pelf,
And damns to Night his Gold, his better Self: I
But Charity, and sympathetic Love,
To help the famish'd Object, nobly strove.
In him the Poor constant Assistance found,
Implor'd his Mercy, and his Goodness own'd.
Swift to relieve, his Hand ne'er brook'd Controul;
The bounteous Servant of a bounteous Soul.
In fine, he liv'd as much as Mortal can
A faithful Subject, and an honest Man.
But thou, alas! art gone!.......gone to receive
That Crown of Glory, which thy God shall give:
Gone to those happier Climes of endless Peace;
Gone to those Realms of Joys that never cease?
To hear th' applauding EUGE there bestow'd,
And sing th' eternal Praises of th' eternal God.
Help, mighty God: in Mercy lend thine Aid;
The Godly cease, and in the Dust are laid:
The faithful make their Exit from the Stage,
While Vice exults in this degenerate Age
* Ultima Cumaeum Terris Astra reliquit.
