PORTSMOUTH.

Last Tuesday evening a train of very remarkable occurrents happened at the entrance of this Town. A Chaise returning moderately to Town just at dark, first of all met 2 Carts going out upon the road, the drivers huzzaing all the way, as if they had been loaded with Sailors in a Frolic, and narrowly escaped being run down by them. A few moments after two men upon Horses came along upon a full Career and suddenly met the Chaise, before there could be opportunity of turning out of the way ; one of them grazed along by the Head of the Horse in the Carriage, and scarcely avoided the shock : this turned the Chaise Horse a little crossways to the Road, and instantly the other came upon the opposite side, and struck with such violence against the Shaft that Man and Horse tumbled together as if they had been Shot instantly dead. The Chaise Horse then in a fright sheered off to the Other side of the way, and there a third met him in the same manner, the Rider of which was likewise thrown off. This last escaped without hurt, as likewise did the Persons in the Chaise ; but the other had the outside of his right leg miserably wounded, the flesh being mangled several Inches, and torn off the Bone, which just escaped a fracture : and his Horse was lamed. However we hope the poor Man's wound will not prove mortal.

N. B. This should caution all Persons against riding furiously in the Dark, especially near a populous Town ; and lead every one to reflect upon their dependance on the protection of divine Providence from innumerable dangers which otherwise could not be forefeen or prevented.
