The charming weather of yesterday contributed to enliven the reciprocal salutations of kindness and good wishes which are customary at every return of New Year's Day.
The President's House, for the first time since its re-edification, was thrown open for the general reception of visitors. It was thronged, from 12 to 3 o'clock, by an unusually large concourse of gentlemen and ladies; among whom were to be found the Foreign Ministers, Heads of Departments, Senators, Representatives, and other of our distinguished citizens, residents, and strangers. It was gratifying to be able once more to salute the President of the United States with the compliments of the season, in his appropriate residence; and the continuance of this truly Republican custom has given, as far as we have heard, very general satisfaction.
The Marine Corps turned out on the occasion, and made a fine appearance.
