Full Text
Every friend to the commerce of the United States must see with concern the growing importance of the British colonies of Nova-Scotia, &c. those men who barred the way to the return of a great majority of their present inhabitants, into the States from which they absented themselves -Their fears on the head ought not to excuse them--for what in the name of common sense was to be apprehended from unarmed men, neglected by, and dissatisfied with, the party whose cause they had assisted, who when in open war could effect nothing against us. The door may yet be opened--and as our rulers most certainly have the true interest of our country at heart, it is expected that there will be laws enacted, inviting them back to the states again, and holding out to them protection and encouragement, The measure would be politic and benevolent, and the consequence, if we may judge from the spirit of enterprize which it is known they possess, would give a spring to our declining commerce, which may save it from entire decay.
