Full Text

Copies of letters from JAMAICA, Feb. 22.

"A report prevailed lately, that a great French armament was come to Hispaniola, consisting of 9 ships of the line, 4 frigates, and 12,000 troops; this was so generally believed, that the Admiral on this station immediately prepared to send home a vessel with the information, and purchased a sloop for that purpose; since which the report has, upon very good authority, been contradicted, and is now entirely discredited, it appearing from the concurrent testimony of two or three persons, who left Hispaniola a few days ago, that the whole was no more than a relief of the regiments stationed there, and consisted only of four transports already arrived with 1700 men, and one or two others expected with 400 more, three frigates being on the station.

The French Admiral Garnier, of this Court, disclaims any knowledge of a squadron having been fitted, or now fitting out in France, with hostile intentions towards Great Britain."
