The Spanish brig Argonaut, Capt. Ava, bound to Havana, left Santander, on the 11th instant, on a cruise to engage in the Cuban trade. She encountered a severe gale off Cat Key on the morning of the 11th, at 2 o'clock. The captain, mate, crew, and seven passengers, (in all, twenty-four souls,) took to the boats, and reached Cat Key in safety, leaving fourteen passengers on board, all of whom perished. The Arab, Capt. G. Chase, arrived here this morning, six of those that escaped and the remaining eight were taken on board the ship Leonida, Mobile. The names of those who perished can be seen at the office of the Spanish Consul.
Too much praise cannot be given to Captain Chase for his humane conduct in taking off at Cat Key—and the suffering seamen of the Argonaut. Those saved had subsisted 43 hours without food or nourishment of any kind.
Eight of the above-named crew were kindly taken on board the sloop Leonida, Capt. Ackerman, bound to Mobile, who generously followed the example so humanely set by Captain George Chase of the ship Arab.
