A person who claims to have had a conversation with Mr Dayton, the American minister at Paris, has given an account of it to the London Times. The talk was about the iron-clads now building in England, and the indisposition or impotence manifested by the English government in not preventing the Alabama and Florida from sailing. Mr. Dayton is represented as saying, "if, in consequence of your negligence, or of your self-inflicted impotence, these ironsides escape and plunder us, the American people, irritated enough already, will be ungovernable. You have seen enough of them to know that their resentment is not under the control of their interests. They will really become as mad as your French friends call them. They will be quite ready to ruin themselves in order to ruin you." Whether the American minister ever said this or not, it is the truth. The Yankees are good natured, long suffering and kind, but once get them mad and they are terrible spunky. England has taxed our good nature very severely by sending out so many vessels to the rebels, and if the iron clads are also allowed to sail, it will thoroughly rouse the Yankee dander, and there will be a war such as England would not care to engage in. The sudden tacking in the course of the London Times shows that this is beginning to be feared, and there are increasing signs that at the eleventh hour, the English government will consent to accede to our just demands.—Springfield Republican.
