In a letter to the editor Mr. Richard Hamer of Milo gives Col. Cravens another hard jolt. Among other things Mr. Hamer writes:
"Regarding the editorial in your paper to which exception is taken by Mr. Cravens. I will say that I do not know the source of your information, and I am not prepared to say that it is not correct. The facts are as follows:
Mr. Townley, speaking of the disorganized and helpless condition of the farmers to demand their own prices, said that even the I. W. W. were in advance of us, or words to that effect. He then made a prolonged pause as if to let that impressive utterance sink in, and have due weight. I then asked him, 'Do you present the I. W. W. to us as an example that we should imitate?' He did not answer the question but told a story. He made no point to which one could reply and no reply was made as stated by Mr. Cravens.
"Mr. Townley not only paid this implied compliment to the I. W. W. on that occasion but also defended them against the charges that had been made of sabotage in the wheat fields of the northwest. He said there was not a single case known where they had been guilty of such offenses. With the relations that existed between the league leaders and the I. W. W. it is almost impossible to believe that Townley could have believed in his own veracity when here. He must have known that, as the testimony of the I. W. W. trial May 31 shows, 'it was the policy of the I. W. W. to ruin the man who employed them whether he treated them fairly or not.'
"We have been accused by Mr. Cravens of quibbling and misrepresentation. We think we could also make the same charge but will not. Instead of this we are willing to concede that Mr. Cravens had lately been under considerable mental strain. Under this tension he lately suffered a lapse in which he denounced even a Non-partisan official organ of North Dakota as hostile to the league movement. He may have suffered another such lapse. This condition, however, will interfere with his fitness for the position to which he aspires."
