CALL DOWN

SEATTLE, March 16. - Robert Hodge, sheriff of King County, who has many times tried to be not only judge, jury and prosecuting attorney, regarding the conduct of prisoners in his possession, was brought up with a sharp turn today by Superior Judge J. T. Ronald this morning. Sheriff Hodge had refused former prosecuting attorney, John F. Murphy, to see one of his clients, then when a court order was issued, declined that also.

Six feet of Judge Ronald and his massive voice quickly impressed the officious sheriff of the errors of his way.

Early this morning, Dottie Coots and Lillian Peterson, wanted in connection with the blackmail case of Sam Silverman, the wealthy Alaskan, and other prominent persons, arrived in charge of officers. Attorney Murphy received wire, one from Montana, where the Coots woman was arrested and the other from Los Angeles, from where the Peterson woman was extradited, to act as their representatives.

Mr. Murphy went to the county jail and asked to see his clients. "Nothing doing," said Sheriff Bob. "Neither of them have asked to see you and besides I want to see them first."

Mr. Murphy immediately applied to Judge Ronald for an order. The order was issued but the sheriff refused to admit Murphy to an audience with the two women. Murphy then retorted that he had authority to act for the two women, the authority coming from bankers of Miles City, Mont., and Los Angeles.

Judge Ronald was then summoned and he curtly stated to Sheriff Hodge: "You will be given about one second to comply with my orders."

While the staff of the sheriff's office watched their chief, Robert Hodge, bowed and quickly showed Attorney Murphy into the audience room of the jail.

Deputy Sheriff McGillivray was ordered to remain during the conference but he wisely desisted when told by Mr. Murphy that Judge Ronald would be consulted again unless he made his presence a minus quantity.

It is understood that Isabel Clayburg, also wanted in connection with the case, is fighting extradition from the case, is fighting extradition from
