UN moves against racial oppression in S. Africa

NEW YORK - A precedent for United Nations investigation into racial and religious discrimination practices in member countries was established by the general assembly Sunday night with adoption of a resolution to probe the treatment of Indians in the Union of South Africa.

Both the United States on the minority side, with the Soviet Union strongly supporting investigation. The vote was 32 to 15 with seven nations abstaining.

Observers said American opposition was based on this nation's Jim Crow practices, which caused the National Negro Congress to submit to the UN a petition setting forth facts on the oppression of Negroes. Passage of the resolution Sunday opens the door eventually for similar action citing this petition.
