At the late celebration in Waldoborough, of the anniversary of our national freedom, the following toasts were drunk:-
1 July 4, 1776--A speedy recurrence to its principles.
2 The Constitution of the United States--The magna charta of America, may the angry ghost of Washington, appal the heart of the wretch who would attempt its violation.
3 The U. S. of America--May no foreign machinations lure or frighten her to a surrender of her independence.
4 The President of the U. S. of America--May he remember Washington, and go and do likewise.
5 The Commonwealth of Massachusetts--It was the cradle of Independence, may it ever be the nursery of Freemen.
6 Washington and the Heroes who achieved our Independence--an endless succession of their virtues, and our country worthy their display.
7 The Militia--No bounty, and seven years service in a standing army to all its opposers.
8 Agriculture and Commerce--Twin daughters of America, may one never receive the patronage of its Parent to the exclusion of the other.
9 The Patriots of Spain--They were the first to wish us success in our struggle for Independence; we heartily reciprocate their good wishes.
10 Our foreign relations--May they be conducted with such a firm, but conciliatory spirit, as to produce peace without prostration of national dignity.
11 Our Navy--May it never be wasted by the consumption of economy.
12 Our Minister at the Court of St. Cloud--May his recent remonstrance to the would-be conqueror of the world, be supported by Government, and applauded by every friend to America.
13 Political Weather Cocks--May they never feel the breeze of popular favor, but be the constant conductors of the lightning of public resentment.
14 The rights of New-England--The rights they will never surrender, the right to walk the earth, the right to breathe the air, and the right to navigate the ocean.
15 The continued depredations on our Commerce--almost sufficient to induce our oaks, self moved, to rush to the ocean.
16 The Clergy--May they continue the firm friends of virtue without hypocrisy, of liberty without licentiousness, of patriotism without selfishness.
17 The fair daughters of America--May they be impregnable to the coward; but ever ready to surrender on honorable terms to the patriot and soldier.
VOLUNTEERS
Old Massachusetts--As you were: never change front by the left!
The Charter of American freedom--May it be deposited in the archives of Heaven.
The martial spirit of '75--May we imbibe more of that, and less of the party spirit of 1810.
