A Portland dispatch of the 30th says news has just been received from Malheur City that two of Howard's scouts had arrived there with dispatches. The scouts left Howard's command about ten miles northwest of Malheur Agency. The soldiers were entirely out of rations. The scouts crossed several fresh Indian trails leading direct to Malheur Agency. It was thought the hostiles were either going to the Agency to surrender or making toward Stein Mountain. Several hostiles passed through near Malheur, clearing out a few houses and shooting at the citizens.
