AN INFERNAL MACHINE.
It Causes
Some Excitement Among the
Brooklyn Police.

No little excitement is prevalent among the
Brooklyn police this morning over the finding
of an alleged infernal machine.

It was taken to the Tenth Precinct Station-
House last night by a patrolman to whom it was
handed by Michael McHugh, a saloonkeeper, at
658 Washington avenue.

It was left with Mr. McHugh in a package
which also contained an anonymous note,
stating that the box was a patent, and that its
inventor would call in for it on Saturday.

Francis Stone, an habitué of the saloon, pulled
open the sliding cover of the box, and as he did
so a slight explosion greeted his ears.

Instead of dropping the box he blew out the
incipient blaze in its interior and made a further
investigation. Fastened on the inner side of
the cover was a strip of sandpaper which had
ignited a row of matches placed on end at the
bottom of the box.

A quantity of broken glass and cotton waste
were near the matches, with a small vial con-
taining some dark-colored fluid and a sealed tin
box. The liquid and the contents of the box
will be analyzed.
