One year and a half ago, a company sank an artesian well the depth of 200 feet in a valley at the edge of a creek, for the ostensible purpose of prospecting for coal. They succeeded in finding, and piercing through a vein six feet in thickness, but were unable to work it, by reason of the density of gas escaping therefrom. A torch was applied at the top, when instantly a flame sprang up fifty feet, which still continues. A stone building has been erected over it, and it is now visited by hundreds weekly. The gentleman in charge informed me that the rooms above were supplied with gas from the well, and that pipes were to be laid from it to the city.
