Police Matron Thorpe and Poor Commissioner Hale relieved the distress of an unfortunate family on Saturday by sending them to their friends. It was John Thomas, who lives on Garfield street in North Topeka. He, with his wife and three small children were in destitute circumstances. Thomas is a subject of epilepsy and is unable to do any work. He has been operated on for the disease, but the efforts of medical men seem to have been fruitless. He has a hole in his head where the skull was trephined in an effort to relieve the pressure on his brain. Transportation was secured from the county for the woman and three children. Police Matron Thorpe secured subscriptions for Thomas and purchased a ticket for him. The county refused to furnish him with transportation. The family was sent to St. Joseph where they have relatives who will help them.
