PORTSMOUTH:

The following POEM was wrote before the News of the KING's DEATH.

ROM Pole to Pole.

Great GEORGE, thy Deeds proclaim,

The mighty Wonders thou hast Done,

The Glories of thy Reign.

The present Age Sees and admires;

Each Age to come shall read,

A Father to thy People thou,

Thy Enemies bow or bleed.

Thy Wisdom rais'd the wondrous PITT

To his exalted Sphere.

Great, next to Thee, his Praise shall sound

All round our Atmosphere.

Thou mak'st thy HAWKE protect thy Doves,

Their Enemies destroy,

Pursue them, as on Eagles Wings,

And robs them of their Joy.

Behold the French, sink, strike, or burn.

Each Ship that Does not run,

They are Destroy'd as tho' they had,

Neither Powder, Ball, nor Gun.

Thy WOLFE devour'd, but not the Sheep;

The Goats they were his Prey:

He conquer'd, bled, then smil'd. and dy'd,

A Compleat Feat that Day.

Nought left below but Dust and Fame,

A Monument we'll raise,

Immortal be our Heroe's Name,

While Bards shall sing his Praise..

Go! Search Records of Heroes great,

The Flourish take away,

And WOLFE deserves what'ere was wrote,

Or Poets ere can say.

As subtle as the Serpent,

In Council is AMHERST!

And yet as innocent as th' Dove,

Close as the Grave his Breast.

The Lion and the Lamb.

In him are mingled (so)

He's the Soldiers Benefactor,

The Enemies potent Foe.

The Time would fail only to name,

The Wise, the Great, the Brave,

Our King employs, in Virtues Cause,

His People's Rights to save.

How happy, are we Subjects,

That's rul'd by such King.

Allows us Life, and Conscience,

Protects our every Thing

Heaven's preserve his precious Life.

Till some far distant- Time;

And then give him a glorious Crown,

In a much happier Clime:

Prepare the Heir apparent,

With every Princely Grace

To out-shine his Predecessors,

When he shall fill that Place.
