ON Saturday last the General Assembly of this Commonwealth proceeded, by joint ballot of both Houses, to the election of a member of the Council of State, to supply the vacancy occasioned by the death of Lewis Harvie, Esq. The candidates were, Skelton Jones of Hanover, Charles K. Mallory one of the delegates from Elizabeth City, Colonel George W. Smith, Doctor William Wardlaw, and Doctor Thomas Upshaw, of this city.

On the first ballot the votes were for Mallory 60; Smith 52; Wardlaw 40; Upshaw 20: Jones 11—Total 183.

As none of the candidates had a majority of the whole number, no less than five other ballots took place, before the election was decided, the results of which were the following:

2d Ballot.—Mallory 70; Smith 63: Wardlaw 37: Upshaw 16—Total 186.

3d Ballot.—Mallory 87; Smith 84; Wardlaw 13: Scattering 3—Total 187.

4th Ballot—Charles K. Mallory 94; Smith 93: Samuel K. Mallory 1—Total 188

5th Ballot.—Mallory 94: Smith 94—Total 188

6th Ballot.—Mallory 93: Smith 95—Total 188

Col. George W. Smith was therefore declared duly elected a member of the Council of State.
