"A courier is just arrived here from the grand army with advice, that on the 24th of last month, Major General Wieman passed the Danube, near Tulchi, with 800 grenadiers, in order to make a diversion while an attack was made on this side the river, by General Potemkin, upon the fortress of Turla. Notwithstanding Tulchi was defended by a garrison of 3000 men, and several batteries, M. Wieman began the attack, and with his small body of troops entirely routed the garrison, took several prisoners, conveyed part of the cannon away in small boats, spiked up the remainder, and pursued the enemy to a considerable distance. The Grand Vizir being informed of this enterprize by a spy, dispatched seven large vessels to destroy the boats which transported our troops; but our forces perceiving this fleet was intended to prevent their retreat, reimbarked with the greater expedition; and immediately attacked and seized seven of the enemy's vessels. General Wieman repassed the river, and returned safe to Ismail."
