Dear Mr. Editor:-

Not having seen anything in your paper for some time from our Pomonkey scribes concerning the doings in our little town, thought that while "Snooks" was taking his siesta, would jot down a few items.

Our debating club had a basket picnic in the woods near our town on the 4th, with singing, reading the Declaration of Independence, debating and speaking.

The first on the programme was dinner, of which they had an abundance, enough to feed half of Charles County.

Second, singing, assisted by the ladies, and was airs at its best.

Third, the reading of the Declaration of Independence by Mr. A. M. Bryant, which he did with great credit to himself.

Fourth, debate by the Messrs. Halleys, Roane and Cox. Very good and last, but not least, a Fourth of July oration by Mr. J. W. Duley, which for beautiful and appropriate language we were agreeably surprised and think we would have to travel a long distance to hear a better.

A state of the audience proposed to adjourn to Tabman's Hall, and there to wind up with a fandango by Prof. Miss Hetty, failed to make his appearance under usual disability.

Our correspondent was there, and proposed however at the mouth of July to have one on the 1st Avenue and last port from the United States or captured, good parlor matches, and have a grand display of fireworks at night.

There has not been any marriages or deaths in our neighborhood for some time. There still is a "lull in the matrimonial breeze," but for reason we know not.

Our "village blacksmith" is alive and kicking yet.

Ne plus ultra.
