Kivalina Airport Bids
Invited by Aviation Dept.

ANCHORAGE - The Department of Aviation is inviting bids for the construction of a steel mat surface landing strip at Kivalina.

The bids will be opened on June 5 in Anchorage.

Items of construction include 15,000 cubic yards of embankment, transportation of approximately 450 tons of steel mat now stockpiled at Cold Bay with delivery to the project site, placement of 148,000 square feet of steel plank surfacing, and 10 acres of seeding. Other items of work include the installation of a segmented circle marker and a wind cone.

Kivalina is a native community located approximately 75 miles northwest of Kotzebue on the Chukchi Sea.

The airport will be graded 2,500 feet long and 80 feet wide and surfaced for approximately 2,200 feet by 60 feet. A cross runway will be graded and a parking apron approximately 150 feet by 100 feet will be constructed.

Construction is proposed for the coming season with work to be completed within a 120 calendar day period.

The project is included in the Federal Aid Airport Program. Under this program the federal government shares in 75 per cent of the cost and the state shares in 25 per cent. State funds are obtained from a 3 cent per gallon tax on aviation fuels.

This is the fifth in a series of projects proposed for construction by the Division of Aeronautics. Other projects now up for bid include a 4,000 foot airport at Hooper Bay and 2,300 foot airports at Noatak, Shishmaref and Shaktoolik. All are being constructed under the Federal Aid Airport Program.
