Imperial Precinct Reports 117 Ballots By Noon; Less Interest in North End; Aten, Gregg in Battle
One of the heaviest votes of any Imperial Irrigation District election in recent years was being piled into ballot boxes today as voters went to the polls in every division of the district to elect five directors, a treasurer and an assessor-collector. With interest centered in the northern assessor-collector treasurer campaigns, the vote there was not as heavy as in Divisions One and Two, where white-hot campaigns had been waged for the directorships.
That the northern part of Division Two will elect the director was evident at noon when the Imperial precinct reported 117 votes cast as against a total of 286 for three precincts in El Centro. Rural precincts in the northern part of the division were expected to swing the preponderance of the vote to that area.
Director Ira Aten and W. J. Gregg waged the greatest battle in Division Two.
Voters in the town of Calexico in Division One were expected to outnumber voters in the portion of Division One lying in El Centro, on the basis of noon figures, but indications were that the story will be told there in rural returns. Calexico had voted 181 persons at noon, against 97 in the one El Centro precinct lying in the division.
Director Evan Hewes and Sanford T. Tyler are seeking election in Division One.
Voters in Division Three, where re-election of W. E. Young was conceded by most observers, and in Division Four, where Charles Morrow is without opposition, cast a comparatively light vote, with attention centered on the candidacy of W. A. McFadden against Vinnie Barry for assessor-collector, and Anna McManus against F. H. McIver for treasurer.
Division Five, where Director Mark Rose is opposed by Ollie Stewart, also recorded a comparatively light vote at noon.
Heaviest balloting in all divisions, however, was expected in the afternoon hours.
