WASHINGTON, D. C. Members of the Howard University track team have seriously entered upon their training. Coach H. H. Burr expects to whip a championship team into shape by the time the championships are run at Howard on May 19.
Howard entered mile relay team in the Penn Relays, scheduled for the Univ. of Pennsylvania on April 27 and 28 in Philadelphia. Martin Sutter entered in the 300 meter steeplechase. He has shown well in the distance as well as hurdles.
William Cheney, former middle distance man, and alum of Howard is assisting Burr by coaching the middle distance runners and mile relay. Anderson, assistant prof. of education, and former star track man of Howard, will coach field events. Glascoe, Mack, former football captain and track star, is coaching the dashes. Among those trying for the sprints and who show promise of being in good performances are Roy Seurry, an all-around, Stratton, Thompson, Sarah Rand, Gitten. The 440 men include Rand and Gitten. Half milers thus far are Pippin, Pierce, Stalling, Pinn, Coles, Morson and Reid. Going the longer distances will be Pierce, Stalling, Johnson, and Sutter in the mile and Sutter and Johnson in the two miles. McDaniels and Joynes are candidates in the hurdles. The field events will be well rounded with Jarrett, member of this year's football team, in the shot put; and Johnson, Turner and Pinn in the javelin. In the broad jump, Coach Anderson has among his charges Stratton, Cowan, Campbell, Wynne, Turner, Seurry, Jarrett and Fowles. Cowan and Joynes are out for the high jump and Pinn, Johnson and Cowan in the pole vault. A dual meet is planned for May 5th with Morgan College at Howard. The Bison team will enter the Hampton meet at Hampton on May 1, before adding the final bits of training for the IAA championship on May 19 at Howard.
