A BRUNSWICK BEAR.
From my den, Feb. 1810.

FOR THE PORTLAND GAZETTE.

POET'S ENTHUSIASM.

THE bard like an elf,
By Fancy when stirr'd,
No more is himself:
But raptur'd, inspir'd.

His spirit in trance,
Wild in devotion,
Like unbeaten dance
Earth, air and ocean.

Can leave earth behind,
Like eaglet's its view,
On wings of the wind,
To pierce nature thro'.

Resistance can mock.
In ecstasy borne,
Where light zephyrs rock
The cradle of morn.

Pluck from the rainbow
A heav'nlier hue,
For th' images glow,
His bright pencil drew.

Can find tongue in tree,
Contemptible clod,
In ev'ry thing see,
And feel there's a God.
