Having viewed the Philosophical Reasons (in your Paper of October 21.) why the most ignorant Men are generally most conceited; upon considering the same, it appears a melancholy Truth, and brings to Mind, what was asserted by Elihu, when Job's three Friends could not answer Job with all the Philosophical Reasons they could find: Elihu Says, there is a Spirit in Man, and the Inspiration of the Almighty giveth him Understanding, Job 32. 8. And the Want of that Gift from the Almighty, is the Cause that so many great and learned Men in our Day are spiritually ignorant, and don't understand the great Doctrines of the Gospel, so as to distinguish between the Covenant of Works and the Covenant of Grace, which makes the Arminian Scheme prevail so much in this Land: And we need all take the Apostle's Caution, Colossians 2. 8. Beware lest any Man spoil you through Philosophy and vain Deceit, after the Tradition of Men, after the Rudiments of the World, and not after Christ.
