On the downward Path.

W. R. Helvia, a boy about 17 years old, was caught by Marshal Ganger with a gang of toughs and locked up Saturday night. The boy said that he had been tramping it since leaving home in Salem, and confessed to being in the company of an ex-convict, a pickpocket and two hobos. He also said that the pickpocket had robbed two people that he knew of at the depot, one of $20 and one of $40. The marshal bought the boy a ticket to Salem, keeping his watch as security, and the boy's father notified. He said his father was in the employ of the Salem Statesman. From the information secured from the boy the marshal has kept a strict watch for the rest of the gang, but they got out of town without any further trouble being reported.
