STEAM ROLLER CATCHES UP WITH AL

FRED C. OTHMAN
Staff Correspondent

CHICAGO, (U.P.)—August wheels of the federal government rumbled like gigantic steam rollers tonight, to crush the dreaded Scarface Al Capone from the national picture.

The steam roller had at last caught up with the living symbol of all that is cruel, merciless and greedy, to send him into the federal court tomorrow, for arraignment on double-barreled charges designed to send him to prison for years to come, to rip his gang of murderers and to redeem Chicago's reputation as the "crime capital of the world".

Federal agents, working under orders from the highest officials in Washington, took over the job of wrecking Capone's underworld baronry, when local authorities admitted they were powerless to cope with his billion dollar army of machine gunners, bombers, brewers, distillers, accountants and attorneys.

And such a thorough work did the U. S. officers accomplish, that they already have sent most of Capone's principal henchmen to prison.

As for Scarface Al himself, they have obtained his indictment for defrauding the government on income taxes and flooding the middle west with beer, bottled in his chain of breweries.

Evidence Complete

So complete is the evidence, that Scarface is thinking seriously of pleading guilty to both charges.

If he does plead not guilty tomorrow, he may change his plea to one of guilty later on, and thereby gain enough time to put his affairs in some sort of order, before starting for Leavenworth prison.

If he receives the top sentence, he will soak in prison for thirty-two years on income tax charges and for two more years on beer accusations.

In addition he will have to pay a maximum total fine of $90,000.
