Full Text

We learn from a late London paper that Peter Pindar, Esquire (the English Aristophanes) has in a number of odes jointly attacked Mr. Paine, on his "Rights of Man"—and a set of people, whom he calls "British Democrates" for celebrating the downfall of French despotism, on the 14th of July. "This Pindar [say the Reviewers] must certainly be an unreasonable man. He would monopolize the Kings of the earth, and appropriate them solely to his own use and emolument—but why, Mr. Pindar, not let a brother satirist, or a democratic politician have a mouthful of royalty with you? why churlishly consign Mr. Paine, and all the merry fellows who met to laugh down, and drink down despotism at the crown and anchor, to old Nick, for having, peradventure, the same high flavour taste and relish for soup royal with yourself? Why thus abuse poor Mr. Paine and other Speculators on reformation, for having the assurance to make free with Kings' crowns, and scepters— In truth, Peter, you seem in a fearful passion, but tho' we have always been forced to laugh with you in your former odes, we cannot participate in the ill humour with which these latter abound."
