LUTHERANS IN SESSION.
Seventh Annual Convention Opens at Iowa City.

IOWA CITY, Iowa, Oct. 9.—The forty-seventh annual convention of the Evangelical Lutheran church of the synod of Iowa began here today, with about seventy delegates present from the Lutheran churches throughout the state. The sessions will continue the rest of the week and Sunday. The opening sermon was given by Rev. J. A. Wirt, D. D., of Des Moines. Tomorrow at the business meeting in the morning the officers of the synod for the coming year will be elected. Rev. Wirt is the retiring president of the association. Tomorrow afternoon will be a Sunday school conference, at which addresses will be made by Rev. W. A. Lipe, of Webster City; Rev. W. W. Horn, of Lisbon; Miss Vogt, of Burlington; Miss Bertha Goiebling, of Newton; Miss Sarah E. Barnitz, of Des Moines; Rev. M. E. Bollinger, of Princeton.

Tomorrow evening will be devoted to doctrinal subjects, with addresses by Rev. J. A. McCulloch, of Burlington, on "Sin," and by Rev. S. B. Barnitz, D. D., and Rev. H. L. Yarger, D. D., secretaries of the boards of the church. Business sessions of the synod will be held Friday and Saturday mornings, at which the financial reports of the various boards will be received.

Friday afternoon and evening will be devoted to the twenty-seventh annual convention of the Women's Home and Foreign Missionary Society of the Synod. Addresses will be made by Mrs. Dingman, of Cedar Rapids; Rev. F. L. Sigmund, of Carthage, Ill., president of Carthage college, and by Rev. J. H. Harpster, of Gunter, India.

Saturday afternoon the synod will be devoted to a preparatory service. The sermon will be delivered by Rev. G. W. Snyder, of Council Bluffs. In the evening two doctrinal addresses, on "The Atonement" and "Justification by Faith," will be delivered by Rev. A. B. Shrader of Nevada, and Rev. W. H. Blancke, of Davenport. On Sunday morning the holy communion will be celebrated, with the sermon by Rev. C. A. Gelwicks, of Tipton. The ordination service will be held Sunday evening, with address to the candidates by Rev. C. W. Maggart, of Cedar Rapids.
