Meeting at the City Hall.

We attended the meeting at the City Hall on Saturday evening, the 9th inst., and although it was not so numerously attended as we had reason to anticipate, from the importance given to the notice, the collection was, nevertheless, respectable. The meeting was addressed by Calvin Pepper, Esq. In the course of his remarks, he pourtrayed, in a feeling and concise manner, the ultimate tendency of the late decision of the Supreme Court of the United States, upon the white, as well the colored inhabitants of the free states, and the sojourning fugitive from the slave catchers of the south. Mr. P. was peculiarly happy in some of his remarks, and displayed a warmth of generous feeling, when he exclaimed, "I am not a freeman while such laws exist," that enables the slave-holder, or his agent, from the south, to claim any amongst us as his slave, and at the mere "ipse dixit" of any local justice of the peace, or other magistrate; and with scarcely the shadow of evidence, without trial by jury, dragged into irredeemable bondage. Several resolutions were read by the chairman, and laid over for adoption this evening, to which time, we understood the meeting was adjourned.

The meeting was also addressed in a forcible manner by the Rev. A. Brown, who stated that on next Thursday (this) evening, three or four addresses would be delivered, and among the speakers who would be present, he named H. H. Garnett, a colored man, of Troy. He spoke in high terms of Mr. G.'s ability, as a public speaker. We anticipate, therefore, to-night a full house.
