The New-York National Advocate of the 8th instant contains a letter from John Williams, (an American citizen) addressed to his sister in New-York, dated at Staten Island, Dec. 8th, 1817, in which he represents himself as being on board H B M. ship Esk, lying at the Island, having been impressed. The editor of the Advocate proceeds to state, that in consequence of the information contained in the letter and other testimony, the recorder of the city had issued a writ of Habeas Corpus against captain Lenox, commander of the Esk. a copy of which was served on him the 12th instant; on the 15th no return was made to the writ, and the Esk proceeded to sea with the man on board, no further attempt being made by any of the constituted authorities at New-York to molest the British captain, or to relieve the impressed American seaman.
